Doctors do prescribe drugs way too much these days, especially stuff like antidepressants and ridalyn. Doctors are also getting really stupid.

You healthy people have it all wrong.......
We are in much better shape medically then we were 10 years ago.... think about it this way, our enviroment does not allow us to live as healthy as we could, here's an example: Our air is so polluted that 10 times more kids have asthma now, we are able to treat that so much more easier now with inhalers that contain steriods to help with inflamation.... 10 years ago, we didn't have that.
Cancer is no longer a death sentence Heart disease is no longer a death sentence You can get it up well into your sixties now Diabetes can be controlled High blood pressure can be controlled
Just some thoughts.......

I understand your frustration, but honestly depression is one the of number one medical problems in America, it can cause not only depression, but heart problems, high blood pressure and even cancer....depression has been linked to many a host of medical problems.
Maybe why you think that these drugs are easily prescribed, is because we really had nothing to help people before, there are more anti-anxiety and anti-depressants than ever before. Why? you may ask? Our society teaches us to live in stressful situations, we are NOTHING what we were like 50 years ago.... we really have to bust our asses now to make anything work.
I myself am very glad that we have more choices in treating anxiety and depression, I am living proof that it works well... I suffered from severe panic attacks, I don't know if any of you have ever had one before, but they are scary.....you feel like you are going to die....I was working at a private practice at the time...then when I moved to SAH I was getting them every thirty minutes. I couldn't FUNCTION, let alone take care of patients....thank goodness for Celexa, it cured my anxiety and panic attacks, I rarely have one now.

I'm really against antidepressants. Because of Zoloft, I now have panic attacks for no reason whatsoever. I used to get them when my mom and stepdad were fighting, but thats it. But, about a week after I started taking Zoloft, I started getting panic attacks for no reason. Luckily, since I've stopped antidepressants, I've been able to control them more. And I've tried a lot of antidepressants. I've tried Effexor, Zoloft, Prozac, and Paxil and you know what they did? They either made me worse or they did nothing whatsoever. In my opinion, antidepressants should only be prescribed if they have completely proven that you have a chemical imbalance. They just prescribe them way too much.

I am glad this thread is going, and Kittycat, I am glad you said that. I have been going through a pretty major depression for the last month or so, and it has gotten worse in the last week. There are reasons that this is happening that I wont get into, but my mother thinks I might need to get on a mild antidepressant. I am starting to think the same thing. But I am afraid to.
Jana, are their MILD ones out there that wont make you dependant on them to be happy for the rest of your life?

Kitty and Lady,
Have either of you been checked for thyroid? This could be the cause of depression. Depression and panic attacks are not just things that are caused by stress or life changing situations, your body could be telling you something. You should have a complete blood work-up with your Doctor.
I am curious why this big back lash about antidepressants? They work on so many people, if they didn't work on you don't discount them as something that just simply dosen't work, medicine is great but it dosen't solve every problem.
As far as mild antidepressants, I could not tell you. I think that if you have had a few weeks of depression going on that you should visit with you GP and find out the root of the problem.

In The UK, they are going to outlaw antidepressants for people under 18. You know why? Because some of the side effects are becoming suicidal and homicidal. Ever heard of Bredna Hartman? She was on Zoloft when she murdered her husband and she killed herself. Zoloft causes homicidal and suicidal tendencies in some people. Antidepressants should only be taken by people with a chemical imbalance, not for people who are just depressed because of life-changing situations. People need to find out what is making them depressed and try to fix it before they try anti-depressants. They didn't only not work on me. They didn't work on a lot of people that I know. And yeah, I am against antidepressants because Zoloft caused me to have panic attacks for no reason. I'll find the article on it later, but I have to go to church now. Have a great day everyone.
