Have a good day kitty!

I'm sorry...I respectfully have to disagree with both of you gals..... the only reason why they are much more prescribed is because they are relatively new, you are hearing alot more about it now. The problem with anti-depressants is that there is such a stigma attached to being depressed, like it's something to be ashamed of. Sometimes it takes several tries on different meds to figure out what works.....I would not discount it as simply something that is horrible, like for instance Kitty tried one of them and it did not work, you had adverse reactions, that simply dosen't mean that ALL of them don't work. These meds should be carefully monitered by you doctor. If you felt you were given something at the drop of a hat that was not carefully monitered then I would say change GP's.
These meds do WORK on a lot of people, depression should be treated like any other illness out there, don't feed into society's thoughts on depression.....

And BTW.... YES some doctors do. I have witnessed it.
All you have to say is "I have been having a hard time for the last couple of weeks..." and BAM... you have Zoloft.

Did you see how many antidepressants I mentioned that I've taken? I mean, I've tried a lot and none of them worked, because I didn't and don't have a chemical embalance. The only thing that ever helped me was Adavan, but doctors don't like to prescribe it because its supposedly addictive. Well, shit, my friend will never be able to get off of Zoloft. She tried recently after being on it for three years and it made her have horrid panic attacks and she couldn't really do anything, because of the withdrawal symptoms. I was on Zoloft for a year and a half. It was good for me to get off of it, because they kept raising my dose. I started out with 25 then they put me up to 150. I stayed on 150 for one day because I was acting like a walking zombie and my mom thought I needed to go to the hospital. I've just met too many people that they haven't worked for and doctors just want to prescribe it at the drop of a hat. I understand that some people need them. Some people do get chemical embalances but a lot of people that are on anti-depressants don't. Most people get depressed for a reason. What they really need to do is find out what that reason is and try to help them.

Baloo,
I have to agree with you. About six-eight months ago, my son became 'suicidal'. I was concerned at first, but then as my husband pointed out, he was grounded and seeking sympathy (trying to get off punishment early). SO, regaurdless of what my husband thinks I schedule him a dr's appt. I went to talk to her first to fill her in on his behaviour and his personality traits and to pretty much get a feel for her to see if I would like her and to see if my son would like her. I told her right off the bat that he does and says things for attention and to fit in with his friends. Shortly after he starts going to her I find out from him that alot of his friends are 'suicidal' too and on antidepressants. My son is a follower and will go to any length to fit in. No matter how hard my husband and I have fought this, this is how he is.
After a couple of visits alone with the therapist, he wants my husband and I to sit in with him while he talks to her. Everytime we sat in we saw how she just fed into him and put words in his mouth and 'helped' him express himself. Shortly after that she wanted to put him on meds. I am sorry, I told her under no uncertain terms was he to be put on them. It was clear to me that he WAS feeding into her and she was feeding into him. He just wanted the pills to be like his friends and she was about to make that happen. Could you imagine how a 17 year old on antidepressants (that didn't need them) could react?! Not to mention he is miraculously ok now. Gee I wonder how that happened?!
So, YES I do think that they are given out irrationally. And if I had my way about it, I would have filed a formal complaint against her has it not have been for my husband calming me down. I would still like to break her off a piece!
