What has happened to courtesy these days? Why does no one say, “Please”, “Thank You”, “You’re Welcome”, “Excuse Me”, “Ma’am”, “Sir”… anymore? My parents always taught me that this is what you do, so now I almost always say these polite words when possible. I was beginning to get used to other people not saying the same things to me, or back to me, until a few days ago. I was walking into a local convenience store when a Lady hurried up to make it in front of me. She was not close enough so that I could open the door for her, or I would have, however, she was close enough that she could have been polite enough to give the ‘courtesy hold’, but she didn’t. Instead, the door shut right in my face. Which is rather amusing to look back upon now, but at the time it made me wonder what has happened to courtesy and manners? It’s not that hard to say a quick word or two each day, or to hold a door open, or to just be polite and say “hello” when you see someone. So, I have decided to start this “campaign” to ask for your help in bringing back courtesy. Even if we all start by simply doing or saying one nice thing a day, it will eventually turn into 2 or 3 or … So, the next time someone hands you something, say “Thank you”. The next time someone lets you “cut in” in traffic, give “the wave”. The next time someone is just in front of you entering a building, grab the door. You get the point. Help me spread the word about the “courtesy campaign.” As long as you mention the campaign to someone and try to get them to start as well, that’s all I ask of you. So until I see you again, have a wonderful day and a great life.
