This is an email that I recieved from the Webmaster at KROX. The FCC is making MAJOR changes in what content they will allow on television and radio (thank you Janet & Justin ) Please read the note, and then click on the link to sign the petition. While the changes may not affect our message board here at WTFl, it WILL affect the commie board (not that I care whether they shut the site down , but I know some of you do )
To all KROX moderators:
I got a print out of the "censorship stuff" that Emmis is handing out. I thought it would be a good idea to post it here as guidelines for what we all need to be on the look out for.
What this means to you.
Don't do "blue": avoid ALL content involving sexual or excretory activities.
If you think content may be indecent or problematic, don't do it.
Any potentially risky content should be approved (this means that we could moderate all the posts and read all of them before they are posted i.e. approve each post)
This applies 24/7
What this means to you.
Absolutely no sexual or excretory topics.
Absolutely no profanity.
Inform everyone of our rules.
Closely monitor discussions.
Be prepared to terminate conversations.
Apologize to readers in the event of a problem.
Need to properly edit offensive words; complete (not partial)
Examples
Reading or discussing stories involving sexual encounters regardless of language being used.
Innuendos regarding sexual acts
Topical discussions regarding sex (e.g., where is the strangest place you ever had sex; what is your favorite sexual position).
Profanity or words describing sexual ats
Conversations with porn stars or strippers.
All of the above in Spanish or English or pig Latin.
Content that is acceptable
Jokes or humor not involving sexual content.
Political commentary
Discussion of news or other current events
Description of stunts or jokes involving non-sexual activities.
Final Thoughts
Understand the importance of this issue to the FCC and Congress
Be pro-active in avoiding indecent content; use good judgement
Focus on our fundamental business objective in this area: protect our licenses
Continue to deliver quality programming and content to our listeners and our communities
I'm sure there are a lot of questions etc. I'll try to answer them as best I can. Since the FCC looks at not only what is played on the air but also what is on the web sites it is very important that we monitor things much more closely than we have before because if we don't, the message forums are probably going to go away, and or the FCC might not renew the liscense for the station and no one wants that.
I figure that if we get on the ball right now about this it won't be an issue when Emmis realizes the forums and that it's a lot harder to control the content of our users. There are other solutions than getting rid of the forums all together (i.e. read each post and approving them to be published on the site which is a pain in the ass).
I also have had a rating system for a long time on each site. (For those of you that may not know this, J runs the KLBJ website also). So I think that might work in our favor. Just keep these guidelines in mind when you are moderating.
I can't stress to you enough how important this really is.
