On November the 8th, I had a dear friend pass away in a horrible traffic accident. Wade Pittsford ( The coach )
It was a very sad funeral due to the fact that he was such a young man that had so much more living to do.
His funeral was in a rather large Babtist church, the place was PACKED, this church reminded me of a lecture hall! It had a balcony and side seats, there must have been atleast 2,000 people at his funeral, he was a very popular person that touched many lives.
Anyway, what I am getting at is..... His funeral was done in classic Babtist fanfare, and the preacher ( I think that's what you call him) said that the ONLY way that we could honor our frind in death is to be saved. I took great offense to this statement! What if I was Muslim or Buddist? I was at a funeral of a dear friend, I didn't NEED to hear that the only way that I could honor him was by being saved....I wasn't there to get sold on the babtist church! Why is it that these types of statements get made? I once had an Episcopalian Priest tell me that if I was not Epsicopal that I was going to hell. What's up with that?

You have to remember Pastors, Priests... whatever you might call the 'person' of cloth in your religion, is still a person. People phrase things incorrectly some times. It's human nature. You must remember though, not all of them are the same. I don't particularly care for 2 of Julie's Ministers, but there is a third one I don't mind. They all have their own style and technique just as you might have your own way of getting your job done. Some times you might not agree with it, but they're only trying to do what they know to do. Hope that makes sense a little.

That's a pretty big insert foot if you ask me....I mean.... goodness....2,000 people at a funeral and saying something like that?
That's like letting a really bad cuss word slip while your talking to the Pope!

Julie's Minister has been preaching to her family since before she was born. She's like a second daughter to him. Yet, at our wedding, as he was introducing us, he said Judy When under pressure, people make mistakes. Maybe he normally only talks to 600 people at a time. 2000 would be a major shock to the system.

A lil off subject... Well the deacon who married us introduced us as Mr and Mrs Robert. He couldn't pronounce our last name. Ok back to the subject...My friend was also real close to this young man. She said the sermon was very touching. I think the minister or whatever didn't realize what he was saying until the end. Like Baloo said, mistakes can be made under pressure. I also had a Baptist Pastor tell Rob and I that we were condemned to hell because we were living together. We were originally going to get married thru the Baptist church but I said "see yeah!" after he told me that and also that we HAD to get married thru JOP first then he would marry us. PFT as If!

You know...I am not too sure if this was a pressure or a mistake, many people of the cloth try to make you see it their way.....I mean look at the 2 Christian chicks who went to Afganistan to preach Cristianity in a muslim country?
I think this Preacher meant to say what he said.... Maybe not knowing that he offended some people. I agree that the funeral was touching.... it was.... it was a beautiful tribute to a young man who touched so many, I just took major offense to someone telling me that the ONLY way I could honor my friend was to do it the Babtist way.

I'll say a few Hail Mary's for that minister tonight. ;D Seriously, though. A few years ago, we had a really really BAD priest at our church. Every time we had an occasion of a Mass where non Catholics attended (weeding, funeral, etc) He would make a point of stating that "we do not condone non Catholic communion". In other words, at communion time, only Catholics were allowed to come up and recieve the Sacrament of bread and wine. Several parishioners complained, and he finally stopped it. I mean, who is he to make that claim? MOST churches of ALL denominations partake of some form of communion. Thank goodness Fr. Tom celebrates mass with open communion to anyone who cares to partake. And that's as is should be.

Oh, I can't believe that an Episcopalian preacher said that to you. Thats horrible. I've always had really good Episcopalian preachers though. But, anways, sometimes preachers get really pressured or whatever to say something right. But, then again, sometimes preachers are just ignorant morons who honestly believe that the only way to go to Heaven is to be in their church. The only church that I have found that isn't like that is the Mormon church. They don't judge you at all. If you don't want to join their church, they don't try to push you to. They say that you can't judge someone because you don't know what they've been through to make them not believe in God or whatever. Obviously, that preacher at the funeral was either under pressure or ignorant. I'm sorry that happened to you though.

I was raised in the Baptist church. I am primarily Baptist. But, I stopped going to my church a long time ago because of the narrowmindedness the preacher and associate preachers had.
I was condemned for being on the Dance/Drill Team because we dance. It really is a very hard core denomination. Try going to a SOUTHERN Baptist Church. Eeeeeek.
I hate to say this, but my opinion is that the preacher was subtly (or not so subtly) preaching a message to become a Christian. Period.
Baptist preachers will grab ANY situation to witness to people. Which is great! But I dont think it is appropriate in a place filled with so many different beliefs.
My two cents.....

I went to a baptist church as a kid with my mom then later as a teenager with my friends to a Baptist church camp. I mean seriously these girls were getting the freak on while the rest of the church kids were getting washed of their sins. But it was just a big huge lets save you all rally because if you don't do it now you're doomed. DOOMED, Baptist and Fire and Brimstone and big hair and bad southern accents scare me. I think they are the reason I turned away from organized religion. If I ever start going to church again it's definitely going to be a non-denominational one.
