Tulsa - Another word, previously banned from primetime television may soon be coming to a TV set near you. We've looked into a government ruling that may shock you.
What you see and hear on television has changed a lot over the years. Parents beware -- network TV is about to push the decency envelope again.
The detectives on ABC's NYPD Blue have been known to utter a blue word or two. But now, a new curse word, at least new to primetime TV, may be next. When it comes to saying the F word, the government says, its all in the delivery.
In January, during TV's GOlden Globe awards, U2 singer Bono said "this is really, really (expletive) brilliant."
If you think that colorful language violates federal indecency rules the Federal Communications Commission says no, it doesn't. In a ruling earlier this month, the FCC said that the F word may be crude and offensive, but determined it is not obscene for television if used as an adjective or as an insult.
We asked what you think.
"No I don't think that's a good idea. Why is that? Children."
"I don't think I'd be too excited to have my three year old daughter, who's at my feet, hear the f word during a TV show."
"If its me slipping up, that's something I can directly blame on myself, but if its coming across on the TV, then its something I can't control."
"I mean that's just not right. Kids shouldn't be listening to that."
But kids are listening to more foul language on TV. According to a study by The Parents Television Council, a recent increase during the family hour of 7 to 8 o'clock of nearly 95 percent.
And with another bad word given the green light, TV shows may soon turn a deeper shade of blue.
The Parents Television Council is challenging the FCC ruling. And, it's asking that each commissioner respond personally and publicly whether they agree with the decision.
